POST AND MAIL TO BALLOT FOR STRIKE 22-10-2009 Angry journalists at the Birmingham Post and Mail have announced they’ll ballot for industrial action on Monday following the loss of 40 newsroom jobs. The cuts are part of a restructuring which will see more than 80 posts disappear overall – and the end of the Birmingham Post as as daily publication after more than 150 years. As we reported yesterday, there’s a sense of “betrayal” among workers prompting today’s show of hands in favour of a ballot against compulsory redundancies. Management’s proposals ironically “ring fence” certain groups of staff to prevent them leaving, meaning that long-serving employees who want out can’t go – while others who’d like to remain might be squeezed out. The NUJ says it will go ahead with a vote unless the company withdraws the compulsory part of the plan and adapts a more flexible attitude. DISCUSS THIS ON THE STIRRER FORUM |
