SINGING THE BLUES OVER FOOTY’S DEAD ATMOSPHERE 28-05-2008 Birmingham City have become the first West Midlands club to introduce a “singing section” to try and improve the atmosphere at St Andrews. They’ve handed over two blocks of the Tilton End to their more vocal supporters. Blues say they’ve been receiving all kids of positive ideas from their fans, but “one that stood out was having an area in the ground designated for supporters who like a good old-fashioned sing song” (www.bcfc.com) The move is a tacit admission that – in common with most of our grounds – the development of all-seated stadia has been a passion killer. So, too, have high prices, which have driven away traditional supporters – though in this regard Blues notoriously money-grabbing directors have responded rather more slowly. Despite relegation to the Championship, their cheapest season ticket at £325 is still more expensive than at Premiership rivals Aston Villa (£265) and the Albion (£299).
