SUTTON´S HISTORY MAKERS

15-03-2008

Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club Chairman Geoff Fletcher looks forward in anticipation to the biggest game in the club’s history on Saturday as they play for a place at Twickenham and throws open the invitation to Stirrer readers to come along and enjoy a real occasion at a real community club.

The town of Sutton Coldfield is rallying behind its Rugby club as they approach the biggest game in their history this Saturday in the EDF Cup Semi Finals.

A win on Saturday will see the club (and probably a large proportion of the town!) make the pilgrimage to Twickenham, the home of rugby, for the final.

Founded back in 1921, the club is based at Roger Smolden Ground, off Walmley Road, Sutton.

It is run entirely by volunteers and, something we are very proud of, its motto is ‘Rugby in the Community’.

The club is truly a family and community affair, running five men’s teams and a women’s team on a regular basis as well as a thriving junior section with youngsters aged from six upwards playing the game week in week out.

In an age when youth obesity and anti-social behaviour is all the rage, Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club is doing it’s very best to provide an outlet for true sporting endeavour as the club serves as a focal point for almost 100 senior players and their families.

The excitement will all stop on Saturday, however, when the clock hits 2pm as the club will be out in force to cheers on their team.

Having taken a series of scalps during the competition, including Lutterworth, Old Halesonians and Horden, the mighty Sutton are in confident mood.

The semi-final is against Hartpury College - effectively Gloucester Rugby Clubs academy side.

We know it will be tough – the side is packed with England under 19 and under 21 players – but with home advantage and a fantastic team spirit, all involved with Sutton think the have an excellent chance of victory.

So, here’s an open invitation to all local sports fans to come along and watch and cheer on the ‘Greens’.

The £3 entry fee (which includes programme and car parking) will get you in to see what promises to be a tremendous game of rugby access to plenty of food and drink and, also, the final round of Six Nations Games will be shown.

Come and join in the excitement and help this local club from the Midlands make it all the way. Like West Bromwich Albion, Sutton are not only on the cusp of a National Final but are also very close to promotion to a higher league – so any Baggies fans that can make that tenuous link are particularly welcome!
