TAKING LIBERTIES ON BROAD STREET 31-05-2007 The documentary “Taking Liberties” - described as Britain’s “Fahrenheit 9/11” will get a mainstream cinema screening in Birmingham when it opens nationally on June 8th - but moviegoers have been urged to turn up in numbers on the first weekend or riskhaving it removed. Directed by Chris Atkins from Bromsgrove and featuring Stirrer blogger Dr David Nicholl, the film takes a mocking look at the erosion of our freedoms during the ten years of Tony Blair’s premiership. It’s pencilled in for the MAC Cinema later in the summer but there were fears that it might not make it to any of the local multi-screens, thus denying access to “the masses”. A campaign to get it into the Cineworld on Broad Street - as featured on The Stirrer messageboard - has obviously paid off, however, and it has now been guaranteed a three day opening. Beyond that, though, it’s purely down to audience demand. Dr Nicholl explained: “We’ve told the cinema there’s an audience for this. Now we’ve got to prove it. They’ve said they’ll judge it on the first weekend, and if it’s successful it will stay. If not, that’ll be the end of it. “It’s obviously a serious subject, but it’s done in a very humorous way and I would urge everyone with an interest in how the country is run to go and see it.” Dr Nicholl features in a segment of the movie filmed at the Great Barrfactory of Hiatts- the company which has been accused of making handcuffs that are used in Guantanamo Bay.
