BOURNVILLE BOOZE K.O.

26-03-2007

Tesco's application for the first off-license in Bournville has been rejected today by Birmingham City Council's Licensing Committee bringing welcome relief to hundreds of local residents.

Bournville village has traditionally been alcohol-free since it was founded in the 19th century by the Cadbury family and although the chocolate company's social club and a local working mens club are both licensed, there are no pubsin the area - and no off sales either.

Local Conservative councillors campaigned to keep it that way, backed by a huge wave of public opinion.

Now Tesco's application has been knocked back on the basis that there aregrowing concerns about litter, crime and disorder, and anti-social behaviour - for an example of what that means, check out The Stirrer's report from earlier today here.

Tesco has 21 days to appeal.
