Poet's Corner
THE BLUES ARE COMING TO TOWN
29-09-2008

The Conservative Party is hosting its annual conference in Birmingham this week, moving our poet laureate Brendan Hawthorne to get the blues.
The Blues are coming to town
The Blues are coming
The Blues are coming to town
The gloves are off
and the welcome’s warm
The Blues are coming to town
Appealing to the terraces
encouraging transfer windows
of allegiance
The Blues are coming to town
Campaigning for support
from the council high risers
and the politically bereft
The Blues are coming to town
The hotels and restaurants
bars and clubs
are putting out the flags
The Blues are coming to town
The Cameron Tory Roadshow
unscripted and believable
is setting out its stall
a programme of progress
for media digestion
The Blues are coming to town
Those popularity climbers
are marking out their pitch
waiting for their chance
for X to mark the spot
now the ICC stadium
is third in the
premier league of
Blackpool
Bournemouth
and now Brum
No kiss-me-quick
No candy floss
Not even Grorty Dick
when the Blues come in to town
For when the Blues come into town
It’ll be off to
The Balti Belt
Chinese Quarter
and Rest of the World cuisine
to get a flavour of
of modern Brummagem
a gastronomic dream
And if they want to paint the town
a shade of blue not red
they’ll not have to feel
too conservative
when meeting
the feminists at The Rocket Club
to dig a different scene
And when the Blues are in this town
Let them see what they’ve been missing
Let them see how much
has been done
in their seaside absence
and how much more
could be achieved
with their blessing
And when the Blues have been to town
let us hope that they depart
having witnessed
a regenerated City
A rejuvenated
Venice of Great Britain
Let the Blues tell the world
of the benefits of this home turf
Let future torches burn brightly
when Olympians go for gold
Don’t let the Blue politicians
forget it all
in the blinking
of a political eye
Don’t let them leave behind
their Unionist Blues
like a testament waterside monument
Lip service left in silence
washed up under a Gas Street Bridge
