THE END OF PARADISE?
18-10-2008

The fate of Birmingham Central Library remains undecided, but the City Council has rather presumptiously announed it's moving ahead with a plans to redesign Paradise Circus, in conjunction with Brindleyplace developer Argent - news that will come as no surprise to regular Stirrer readers.
In August, we revealed that secret talks had been going on for four months, and that a range of options had already been drawn up (see link here).
A proposal to rubberstamp the partnership will be put the city's Cabinet next week.
Of course, this all pre-supposes that the government will agree to the Council's request to guarantee John Madin's Brutalist Library an Immunity From Listing Certificate - which can not, by any means, be taken for granted.
Unless the Library is relocated to Centenary Square, the revamp of the area will remain a case of Paradise Postponed.
If Taylor and co get the go ahead, expect a major rejig, complete with a major reworking of the traffic system and the creation of a new square to set off the Town Hall clock aka "Big Brum" - plans first revealed on The Stirrer 18 months ago (see link here)
