TILSLEY JOINS BAN CALL ON DEMO 28-08-2009
Birmingham Council’s deputy leader Paul Tilsley has joined the chorus of voices calling for a ban on the proposed march against Islamic “fundamentalism” next week by the English Defence league. Tilsley, who is effectively running the city in Mike Whitby’s absence on holiday, has been quiet about the event until now – and has made no public comment on the violence which erupted following the last EDL march earlier this month. We wondered whether he supported The Stirrer’s Birmingham United campaign to ensure there’s no repeat of the flare-ups. Although he fell short of an endorsement, his statement left no doubt that he wants to the EDL event halted. He said: "I am calling on the police to do everything it can to ban the English and Welsh Defence League as this would negate the need for any other counter demonstration to then occur, which is how things were progressed in Luton for instance." A public meeting at the Council House last week made a similar demand, but West Midlands Police insist they have no powers to call it off. |
