TIME IS A CHANGING

Brendan Hawthorne ponders on the possible Armageddon that may emanate from Swiss border particle acceleration. Have the boffins got their theories and calculations sorted, or are they as hole strewn as their cheeses? Is the end of the world nigh on Sept. 10th? 4 days to live?

Time is a changing

Time stood still one September 11th
Now we’re told it may end altogether on the 10th
A few trigger-happy quantum scientists
are eager to prove a theory
one way or another
at a private Big Bang underground bash
All of humanity is invited to the fallout
whether it wants to be there or not
The venue is neutral
Switzerland’s underground bunker
on the borders with France
will be setting the particle accelerator scene alight
everyone playing games
racing around
picking out the proton threads
down at the Hadron Collider
A CERN in the community project
smashing sub-atomics into smaller dimensions
with chain-gang mentality
before the white coats burst in
shouting, ‘Where’s the Higgs? Where’s the Higgs?’
Now if a Big Bang started it all
could a small one end it?
And if they should succeed in
removing the universal mortar
that simply
bonds the elements together
will everything start breaking down?
Who will be interested
in recording the findings?
Who will be left to read them?
Collate and audit them?
Because sometimes it’s better
to live in fear of the consequences
than prove they exist
And if time and space and all that’s between them
were left to collide in the space between a boffin’s ears
at least it would be contained
And let us all remember that
this experiment is being done in our name
The button being pushed
is making the black hole connection
a potential Armageddon
on our watch
our handover to the future
Our generation
is pulling on it’s reins again
echoing our predecessors’
nuclear mushroom tests
by going one step further
in lemming intelligence
and that next step
one day
will be one too far
Only this time mankind’s last vision
will be a curl of smoke
from the recoil of a cosmic gun
still pointing at the soul of creation
The Swiss have always been keepers of time
Let us hope that their theory on likely survival
is not like their cheese -
chock full of holes!
