WELSH BADGERED OVER CULL 28-04-2008
Badger lovers are organising a mass petition against the cull of their favourite animal proposed by the Welsh Assembly. Evidence suggesting it will halt the spread of TB in cattle in tenuous, but that hasn’t stopped politicians in the principality ordering the slaughter. As we reported in September, the Independent Scientific group appointed by the UK government to investigate the issue concluded that, “Badger culling can make no meaningful contribution to cattle TB control in Britain” (see link here). So far, the Westminster parliament has heeded that advice and resisted calls for a cull from the farmer’s lobby. It’s a different story in Wales, where the devolved assembly has yielded to the pressure (Guardian article here ) Pro-badger groups are considering legal action to try and stop the plan, but in the meantime Sandra Dudley of the Staffordshire Badger Trust is encouraging all readers to sign her petition here Stirrer editor Adrian Goldberg is patron of the Staffordshire Badger Trust. |
