WHITBY’S CHINA EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

Birmingham Council leader Mike Whitby is calling on citizens to help provide aid to victims of the recent earthquake in China. A book of condolence and donation boxes have been placed in the Council House.

It’s almost impossible to comprehend the scale of the disaster, but its estimated that 55,000 people were killed and another 300,000 were injured in the quake and its aftershocks. 25,000 people are still missing and more than 5 million – twice the population of the urban West Midlands – have been made homeless.

Cllr Whitby said: “The need for aid is immediate and desperate, and includes medical supplies, clothing, portable toilets, ambulances, temporary shelters and equipment for testing food safety and water treatment.

"Our  thoughts  are  with the people of China at this time and we recognise that  the people of this City would like to acknowledge this in a practical way. 

"Therefore, books of condolence and donation boxes have been placed in the  Council  House Main entrance and reception and we ask everyone to give generously."

A Charity Bazaar will be held in China Town and Wing Yip Supermarket on Saturday 31 May and Sunday 1 June, followed by a fund-raising dinner on Tuesday 3 June at China Court Restaurant 24, Ladywell Walk, Birmingham. Tickets are £40 each – details from (0121) 773-0099.
