WOLVES INTERNATIONAL

20-11-2008

During international week, Brendan King relflects on Wolves’ astonishing 11-player call up.

Wolves have had a full team of 11 players out this week on international duty.

These lads could line up as a decent team in their own right, to take on any team in the Championship if not, even, minor international opposition.

Although slightly heavy on the attacking and light on the defending – here’s the creditable Wolves international line-up:

Hennessey (Wales)

Foley (RI); Mancienne (England) Stearman (Eng U21)

C. Edwards (Trinidad &Tobago) ; Keogh (RI) D. Edwards (Wales); Kightly (Eng. U21s)

Vokes (Wales); Blake (Eng. U21); Iwelumo (Scotland)

    A 3-4-3 line-up no less!

Both Kightly and Stearman started in the England U21s 2-0 triumph over the Czechs on Tuesday evening at Bramall Lane.

Michael Kightly – the most established U21 of the three Wolves players to feature in the match – was reportedly highly influential and almost scored with a smart turn in leading several England attacks. The 2nd half introduction of Sylvain Ebanks-Blake (winning his first England shirt) livened up proceedings even more.

All of the Wolves players called into the full international squads look likely to win caps as there are so many senior players pulling out with ‘injuries’.

Back home, hoping that no players return from international duty injured, I look forward to enjoying the Wolves most complete and accomplished attacking team in my post war memory, in ‘welcoming’ Blackpool to the Molinuex on Saturday.

The ‘Tangerines’ (albeit in changed strip so as not to confuse with the gold of Wolves) arrive captained by Rob Edwards, who spent 4 seasons and made 100 appearances at the Molinuex, after signing from his original club Aston Villa. The popular Welshman is assured of a big round of applause from Wolves fans.

And much traveled ex-Wolves left wingback / midfielder Mo Camara is likely to make an appearance. A speedy player, who was once at Celtic, but wild and wayward with his crosses whist at the ‘Mol’. I’ll be interested to see if he’s calmed down a little over the last several seasons.

Another familiar face is likely to be the wayward ex Villain, Lee Hendrie, recently signed on loan for Sheffield United by the Pool.

Let’s hope the Blackpool luminaries don’t sparkle too brightly and that it’s the Wolves who outshine the ‘Seasiders’, to increase their lead at the top with yet another emphatic win, on this forthcoming cold and wintry weekend.
