Labour activists are accusing their Tory counterparts in Walsall of “re-writing history” ahead of today’s Bloxwich by-election.
Leaflets promoting Tory candidate Theresa Smith were printed before last week’s announcement last week of cuts to the Building Schools For The Future programme – and rather than scrapping them, the Conservatives appear to have done a spot of “recycling” instead.
As a result, they’ve rather amateurishly censored boasts that the government has given the borough £200million in educational investment.
As Labour point out, the actual figure was only £100m, but in any event, the claim has simply had a thick black line drawn through it.
Labour Party candidate Fred Westley said the ‘new’ leaflet that had been delivered to voters’ homes since the announcement was full of,er, schoolboy errors.
“This amateurish attempt at Tory spin would be being funny until you remember that Bloxwich West’s Frank F Harrison school has lost out on this desperately needed money” he said.
“The Tories are trying to cover it up.”
Westley added: “The leaflet didn’t even get the day of the by-election right and in this new version they have had to block that out and print over it with the correct date.
“It’s like they employed a schoolboy with a John Bull printing set to cover up their mistakes in the hope the voters don’t notice.”
